Hey Siri — What’s the difference between a writer and an author?

I’m just going to throw it out there:

Writers write. Authors finish. Finishing is what this is all about.

Bazillions of people want to write a book. Millions of people plan to start writing a book. Thousands of people actually start writing, but only a fraction of them ever finish.

Now and then I run into people who want to write. They ask me for advice. Know what I say? ‘Let me know when you’re done with your first draft. I’d love to talk to you.’ Know how many people have followed up? Zero.

Lots of people write. I’d even venture to say some people are born writers. But authors finish.

You: finish.
